Serif :

. Serif = "line" (Latin). It is decoration added at end of strokes
. Example : Times New Roman
. Used in advertisements, posters etc.

San-Serif:

. San = "without" (French)
. Example : Arial 
. Used in digital printing, book printing, web, vehicle number plates etc.
